Soil Moisture Sensor Probe Selector

All of Vegetronix soil moisture sensors have the following properties:

  • Low cost
  • Low power
  • Durable
  • High accuracy
  • Small size
  • Insensitive to salt.
  • Regulated input voltage
  • Wide input voltage range

There are several major differences between the two series of soil moisture sensors.  The VG400 series runs at a much lower frequency than the VH400 and so it is extremely lower power, and has higher sensitivity to volume of the medium being measured.  The two probes have different VWC to voltage curves.  The VH400 is more linear especially in the higher VWC ranges, whereas the VG400 response levels off in the higher VWC ranges.  The VH400 costs slightly more than the VG400.

The VG400 series has a low voltage probe the VG400-LV which can be powered from a source of only 2V, and outputs a voltage from 0V to 1.8V.

The VG400 has a much wider sensing field than the VH400.  For example,  if the VG400 is submersed in a pitcher of water, it will have a higher reading than if it is submersed in a glass of water, because it has a wide sensing field.   The VH400 has a much narrower sensing range, and only senses in the immediate proximity, and so is insensitive to differences in the volume of the medium being measured.  If the probe is going to be buried then either probe can be used.   If the probe is going to be used to measure pots of differing volumes then the VH400 should be used.

Use the VG400 soil moisture sensors in applications that require lower power consumption, and where the probe is used in a control function, such as a sprinkler controller.

Use the VH400 soil moisture sensors in soils where the soil will have higher water saturation.  Use the VH400 where you need an absolute moisture measurement that is independent of volume, as in the case of measuring moisture in potted plants.
